Formula DRIFT Crowns a New Champion as the 2007 Season Comes to a Close
Long Beach, Calif. – October 17, 2007 – The Formula DRIFT Championship presented by Circuit City finishes for the 2007 season and crowns Tanner Foust as the 2007 Champion.
Entering “The Finals” at the Irwindale Speedway, Tanner Foust and his AEM / Memphis Car Audio Nissan 350Z lead the Castrol SYNTEC Power Cup standings by less than 30 points over Daijiro Yoshihara and his Rockstar / Nitto Tires Nissan S15 and Chris Forsberg with his Maxxis Tires / Forsberg Racing Nissan 350Z Roadster. Foust held his ground and despite early car problems took home both the Round 7 victory and the overall Championship.
In a packed Irwindale Speedway “The Finals” proved to be an incredible night for Tanner Foust and capped off a successful year for him, which also included winning a Gold Medal at the Summer X-Games Rally competition. The battle of the evening went to Daijiro Yoshihara and Chris Forsberg as they both aggressively drifted side by side and swapped paint. With second place on the line they let it all out and remained so close they received a “One More Time” call from the judges. The second round between the two was still very close and after a hard analysis the judges awarded Forsberg with the victory. The final round was a battle of the 350Zs between Foust and Forsberg and with the Championship already secured for Foust he showed he had more to prove by winning the round and taking home his first event of the season and the $20,000 championship purse.
“The Finals were exciting as all 3 top contenders made it onto the podium. It was a fairy tale ending for Tanner and his team by taking his first event victory of the season and the overall Formula DRIFT Championship presented by Circuit City in the same evening,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT.
Chris Forsberg was awarded the Tires.com Triple Crown Bonus Prize for the season and took home the grand prize of $10,000 and a custom painted Taylor T5 guitar by AP designs. Forsberg created a large point lead by winning 2 out of the 3 Triple Crown events at Road Atlanta and Wall Speedway, and secured his prize by taking second place at the third and final stop at Irwindale Speedway.
