Formula DRIFT Announces New Judge;
One of the Original American Drifters, Ernie Fixmer

LONG BEACH, Calif. – July 8, 2008 – Formula DRIFT has selected Ernie Fixmer, one of the original American drifters, as their new judge for the Series. Fixmer will begin his duties at Formula DRIFT Round 4: High Stakes on July 11-12 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“Formula DRIFT would like to welcome Ernie to the judging panel and are confident with our decision,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “Ernie has over 9 years experience with drifting and we look forward to his expertise in elevating the competition in our Series.”

Fixmer first grew his passion for drifting while enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Okinawa, Japan during the late 90’s. Upon his arrival back to the U.S., Fixmer picked up one of the first major sponsorships of the industry while building his own Nissan 240SX. Fixmer was one of the first Americans to gain a D1 license and continued to hold that license from 2004-2006. He also competed in the Formula DRIFT series in 2004 & 2005. In 2005, Formula DRIFT competitors awarded Fixmer with the “Hardest Working Drifter,” award for his dedication to drifting.

“I am very excited and honored to have been chosen to fulfill this responsibility as a Formula DRIFT judge, and hope that my contributions will help the development of this motorsport, not only in the United States, but internationally,” said Ernie Fixmer, Formula DRIFT judge. “I believe that my experience will help guide my input so that we, as a collective panel of judges, continue to make fair and unbiased decisions.”

Fixmer makes his debut as the new Formula DRIFT judge on July 11-12 for Round 4: High Stakes at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Formula DRIFT Round 2: Feel the Heat Results;
Rhys Millen Takes Top Honors after Being Non-Seeded

Long Beach, Calif. – May 13, 2008 – Formula DRIFT hosted their fifth year anniversary at Road Atlanta this past weekend for Round 2: Feel the Heat. This event also marked the first Tires.com Triple Crown bonus event of the season with Rhys Millen and his Red Bull Pontiac Solstice fought his way to take home top honors.

Round 2: Feel the Heat; marked the fifth year anniversary for Formula DRIFT. Road Atlanta is the home of the inaugural Formula DRIFT event five years ago and has consistently grown each year with ticket sales up 10% from last year.

The highlight of the event was Rhys Millen coming back to true form as he has overcome both physical and mechanical issues to earn the top spot on the podium and take the lead in the Tires.com Triple Crown bonus prize. In the off-season, Millen underwent treatment for a broken back after an accident put him out of commission for awhile. He recovered in time to compete in the first round of the season. Bu mechanical issues took Millen out of the competition in Long Beach leaving him as a non-seeded driver and having to pre-qualify for this second round event. From qualifying to taking home the victory, Millen proved to everyone that he is back to being a contender for the title.

“This was a very competitive competition with top ranking drivers from Round 1 being knocked-out early in the event,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “The field of competition is as tough as it’s ever been and this should make for a very exciting season.”

With top ranking drivers not making it far in the competition this left a small gap for the other drivers to earn very crucial points. Formula DRIFT rookie, Michihiro Takatori and his Super Autobacs Nissan Skyline R34 slid past the competition with fast entry speeds and smooth drifting lines to gain his first Formula DRIFT podium. Ryan Tuerck piloting the Gardella Racing / Mobil1 Pontiac Solstice faced some stiff competition and earned a third place finish moving him in a close 5th place position in the Castrol SYNTEC Power Cup Point Standings. The chase for the Castrol SYNTEC Power Cup is as close as ever with Chris Forsberg and his NOS Energy Drink / Maxxis Tire Nissan 350Z and Samuel Hubinette in the NuFormz Racing Mopar / BF Goodrich Dodge Viper SRT10 tied for 1st place and defending Formula DRIFT champion, Tanner Foust right behind them in 3rd place.

This event was also the first Tires.com Triple Crown bonus event of the season. The Tires.com Triple Crown follows the Formula DRIFT circuit to three rounds of the Formula DRIFT Championship and awards the driver that earns the most points in the 3 selected rounds. This season, Round 2 at Road Atlanta, Round 4 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and Round 7 at Irwindale Speedway were chosen to be the official Tires.com Triple Crown venues. Last season Chris Forsberg took home the bonus prize and now 2006 Tires.com Triple Crown bonus winner Rhys Millen is leading the way to secure the bonus title.

Formula DRIFT Kicks-off the Season to a Sell-out Crowd

Long Beach, Calif. – April 14, 2008 – Formula DRIFT kicked-off it’s fifth season to a near sell-out crowd for Round 1: Streets of Long Beach with Chris Forsberg and his NOS Energy / Maxxis Tires Nissan 350Z Roadster taking home the first victory of the season.

The Long Beach Grand Prix Street Course hosted the opening round and the teams came prepared to start the season off. Scion’s first entry into drifting had Ken Gushi and his RS*R Scion tC make the Top 16, Daijiro Yoshihara made incredible adjustments from a RHD Nissan Silvia into a LHD Pontiac GTO to finish in 5th place overall, and newcomers Justin Pawlak and Michihiro Takatori also advanced to the Top 16 competition. The highlight of the day came when Long Beach local Kyle Mohan battled through the competition to finish in 4th place overall, the highest finish of his career.

“This was the most anticipated opening round in Formula DRIFT history,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “The grandstands were full with standing room only and you could feel the energy of the crowd. The competition was fierce and made for one very exciting event.”

Grand Marshall for this event, Rob Dyrdek, made a special parade lap in his Rogue Status ’69 Camaro, having the car do donuts in front of the packed stands leaving a cloud of smoke that had the crowd screaming for more. Special guest, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and star of the “Ultimate Fighter,” Quinton “Rampage” Jackson also came to check out the action and sign autographs. Even avid rally supporter Ken Block, founder of DC Shoes, came to check out the drifting action. This event also marked the introduction of Miss Formula DRIFT, Catherine Kluthe.

The final battle of the evening brought Samuel Hubinette and his Mopar Dodge Viper back to action against Chris Forsberg and his NOS / Maxxis Nissan 350Z Roadster. After 2 very tight competitive runs with each driver pushing the other to the limits a, “One More Time,” round was called and the finals pitted the drivers in a sudden death victory round. After 2 additional runs with each driver closing in on the other, the judges deliberated and awarded Chris Forsberg as the first winner of the season. 2007 Formula DRIFT Champion Tanner Foust and his Rockstar / AEM Nissan 350Z grabbed the 3rd spot on the podium by beating out Long Beach local Kyle Mohan and his Mazda RX-7.
